While in prison, for stealing $70 worth and spending 10 years as a prisoner, George Jackson became self-educated and socially conscious. Because of his awareness of the reality of capitalism and the stifling American hegemony imposed by the white man, and his certainty that revolution against this situation is an inevitable necessity justified by all laws and laws, and because of his belief that tolerance and nonviolence were not good at making a noticeable difference and did not contribute to changing the reality of blacks, he became convinced that armed revolution and confronting violence with violence is the must. To rise to the occasion of oppressed black thinking, he became ideologically allied with the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, a revolutionary movement that in the 1960s carried out dangerous and radical activities and as an anti-authoritarian black group that was in complete opposition to the entrenched systems of power (and racism) in the United States, specifically J. Edgar Hoover's counterintelligence program. Jackson's killing while trying to escape, according to the official version, sparked many reactions, including that Bob Dylan wrote a protest song in praise of Jackson. ("He could not bear ill from anyone / He would not bow or kneel / The authorities hated him / Because he was too real.") Jean Genet insisted that his collection of letters be read "as a statement, as a question, as a call to rebellion, because first and foremost they are." . Jacques Derrida also wrote a long letter to Genet concerned that the introduction he had written did not do justice to the terrible situation that Jackson's writing was supposed to reveal. This book is a look at what it means to live, or perhaps more accurately, to survive in those prisons. A stark call echoing from within the bowels of a barbaric regime.
